Caron Rockman, MD
SCVS President, 2021-2022
Just over one year ago, under the direction of Past- President Dr. William D. Jordan, Jr., the Executive Council of the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery made the then unprecedented decision to cancel our 2020 Annual Symposium. This bold step was actually taken several days before the World Health Organization declared the global pandemic, and was executed out of concern for our members and attendees, their families, and the greater community at large. At that time, none of us had even an inkling of how this extraordinary crisis would continue over the ensuing year, and up to the present day.
I am pleased to report that several weeks ago, the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery held an extremely successful “hybrid” 2021 Annual Symposium in Miami, Florida. Despite the restrictions associated with the pandemic, we were able to re-emerge with a vibrant, educational, and effective Program using a combination of in-person and remote Faculty, Speakers, and Presentations, while always following appropriate social distancing and safety guidelines. Notwithstanding a limited in-person attendance, it was clear that both the intellectual discussions and camaraderie so typical of our Annual Symposium had been deeply missed by all.
In the months ahead, the leadership Council will continue to develop innovative ways of thriving during the pandemic, and with the advent of widespread vaccination programs we look forward to hopefully resuming a more standard Annual Symposium in Las Vegas in 2022.
I would like to thank the membership of the SCVS for the opportunity to serve as your President in 2021 to 2022. I could not be more proud or humbled to have this role in this Society that has always demonstrated innovation and leadership, and in a Society which has historically upheld the concepts of diversity, equity and inclusion which remain critical in today’s world.
