Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery
President's Message
Thomas C. Bower, MD, SCVS President, 2015-2016
Thomas C. Bower, MD
SCVS President, 2015-2016

It has already been a busy and productive year for the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery and thank you again to all of my professional colleagues in the SCVS for this opportunity to serve you as President.

Momentum is building for the SCVS to take on an even larger role with initiatives important to our specialty. Once recent activity was our leadership’s support of the recommendations being made to the Medicare Evidence Development and Coverage Advisory Committee (MEDCAC), as they relate to management of patients with peripheral arterial disease. Our letter stated that vascular surgeons are uniquely qualified and positioned to care for patients with these problems because of the comprehensive training received in diagnostic techniques, objective testing, endovascular therapies, and open surgical reconstructions.

Come time of our 2016 Annual Symposium we also plan to populate a section of the SCVS website that Members can use to keep updated on important projects, like those of the MEDCAC, that affect us on a daily basis. Presently the following links can be viewed by visiting our Other Items of interest page:

MEDCAC
VascularWeb
Journal of Vascular Surgery
Vascular Surgery Board of ABS
Intersocietal Accreditation Commission
American College of Surgeons
American Medical Association

Please share your thoughts on other websites and portals we might include via email to SCVS@prri.com. Plans are also underway to expand the Social Media offerings of the SCVS so stay tuned on that.

On the subject of the SCVS Annual Symposium, here again is the information for the 2016 program:
44th SCVS Annual Symposium
March 12-16, 2016
Bellagio Hotel
Las Vegas, Nevada

Please remember that the days of our program occur on the earlier side of the week so you can plan your attendance accordingly. The link for the meeting, which is updated regularly, can be accessed by visiting http://scvs.org/symposium/index.cgi.

Just a reminder of some of the key educational offerings from the SCVS:

The SCVS Fellows and Incoming Fellows programs are notable educational offerings for our younger colleagues and attendees to these programs receive both travel reimbursement and complimentary registration to the main SCVS Annual Symposium. I encourage you to have your Fellows participate in these programs and information on them, likewise, will be accessible via the 2015 program website at http://symposium.scvs.org/index.cgi.

The SCVS also offers both the Young Vascular Surgeons (YVS) Program and the Vascular Top Gun Competition; the YVS event is for our colleagues who are newly established in practice, and the Top Gun program provides simulation training on multiple platforms. Registration for these programs will also be available via the main meeting website at http://symposium.scvs.org/index.cgi

All educational offerings of the SCVS are heavily supported by our industry partners. On behalf of the SCVS I thank them again for their important contributions in this collective education to benefit our surgeons and their patients.

We all know that Membership in the SCVS is an enormous benefit for vascular surgeons. Please reach out to your associates and promote membership in the SCVS if they are not already enrolled. Application information can be viewed by visiting http://scvs.org/Membership_Application.cgi.

In closing, thank you again and feel free to share with me any thoughts you may have on how the Society can further enhance its operations. I can be reached through the offices at SCVS@prri.com or 978.927.8330.

Respectfully,

Thomas C. Bower, MD
