Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery
2013 President's Message
Samuel R. Money, MD, SCVS President, 2012-2013
Samuel R. Money, MD
SCVS President, 2012-2013
I would like to thank my colleagues in the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery for the opportunity to serve the Membership as your President for this year. Our Society is one of the leaders in the field of vascular surgery and I am proud of the accomplishments the SCVS has been making for decades.

The most important achievement of the SCVS has been its Annual Symposium which continues to grow each year with a multitude of educational offerings for all vascular surgeons. Our forty-first will take place at the beautiful Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach on March 12-16, 2013 and I encourage you to keep informed about the programming by regularly visiting its website at

One of my own goals for building the SCVS Annual Symposium is to expand the participation of our international peers and I would like to thank Michel Makaroun for his work in making our International Panel one of the highlights of the past several SCVS meetings. I am expanding our 2013 panel to four surgeons which will include a vascular leader from China as well as others from Europe. In addition, when you visit the program web link above, you will see we are also offering an International Award to the best two papers from an International Institution. This Award is an outgrowth of the SCVS mission to foster an exchange of educational ideas between Vascular Surgeons in different countries. The result is improved patient care in clinical vascular surgery and increased international attendance.

A reminder that the SCVS Fellows and Incoming Fellows programs have become unique educational offerings within our specialty so please spread the word about them to everyone in your departments. Attendees to these courses receive reimbursement for their travel as well as complementary Annual Symposium registration, so you should encourage your young surgeons to apply. Registration can be made via the 2013 program website at

In addition to the above the Society also offers the Young Vascular Surgeons Program, an evening symposium for those of you who are just established in their own practice, and the Vascular Top Gun Competition that combines simulation training with a more relaxed evening environment. Registration for these programs can also be made via the program website.

As our educational offerings are supported by industry I would also like to give special thanks to our industry colleagues. They are a big part of the SCVS and what we can do together for vascular surgery is tremendous.

Your SCVS Council will continue its hard work this year with several initiatives presently underway. This includes our societal participation with two seats on the newly established Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) Vein Center board. I would like to thank Alan Dietzek and Ellen Dillavou for being our first two representatives as well as the rest of the leadership for their work and commitment to our organization, our vascular community, and our specialty.

Every SCVS member should feel free to share their feedback with me and the SCVS Council on how the Society can better serve you via email or phone (978.927.8330). Do not forget to register for our next Annual Symposium ( and I look forward to seeing you in Miami Beach.

Thank you again.
